Final meeting of the semester. S.A.G.S. co-hosted with speaker Mr. Chuck Brown, Director of Operations, Upper Colorado River Authority. He spoke on the North Concho River Dredging Project and Stormwater control structures in San Angelo. A barbeque dinner provided by S.A.G.S. was served. Student awards for the 2010-2011 academic year were presented and scholarship recipients for the 2011-2012 academic year were also announced. Scholarships include the Wilton J. Brown Scholarship and the Betty Mills Scholarship which will be awarded for the first time. Results of the officer elections will be announced for the second time. S.P.S. and G.E.O. are having a roundup! It is almost the end of the year, and it is time to celebrate! There will be pork and chicken for dinner along with beans, potato salad, cobbler, and even banana pudding. Officers for the 2011 - 2012 year for both S.P.S. and G.E.O. will be announced at the bash. Students should also be delighted to hear that scholarships will be awarded and outstanding students and faculty will be recognized. Results of the officer elections will be announced. If you would like to help with decorations or food, contact Dr. Sauncy. Also, if you would like to nominate a professor from the physics department for staff excellence, stop by the physics lounge and pick up a form. All forms are due by 5pm on the 22nd. You can nominate ANY professor in the physics department (physics, geology, astronomy...), and it is a great way to show your appreciation for everything they do for you. April 20, 2011: VIN 139, 7pm
Dr. Wallace gave a talk over air quality, a tie into environmental geology. He spoke about RADNET sampling, showed graphs of the results and peaks from the radiation from Japan, as well as peaks from the smoke caused by the surround wildfires. Elections were opened will remain open until April 22nd at noon. Results will be announced at the S.P.S. and G.E.O. round up on Saturday, April 23rd. Mr. Jay Young, with 25 years of experience, a CEO of King Private Equity Group spoke on "Post-college Experiences in Building a Successful Oil Company." San Angelo Geological Society co-hosted this meeting and provided a barbeque dinner. This was one of our largest meetings with over 50 people in attendance! James M. Varnadore Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser Picnic - The Geologic Exhibition Organization (GEO) Club of Angelo State University, in conjunction with the Association of Mexican American Students (AMAS), is proud to invite you and your family to ASU’s Lake House on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from 4:00-10:00pm for a memorial scholarship fundraiser for Mr. James M. Varnadore. Varnadore was an ASU geology student who passed this past January in a tragic vehicle accident. The fundraiser will feature live music, beginning at 4pm with acoustic performances by Justin Cartwright and Clint Halfman, followed by the Texas country bands Bryce Jones and the Bad Decisions, Crossing Tyler, and Buckshot Bradley. There will be a brisket dinner starting at 5:00pm. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and come enjoy, and please remember no alcohol is permitted. There is no fee to enter, but donations are encouraged for the scholarship fund. Let’s come together as a community to remember this terrific young man. We hope to see you there. San Angelo Geological Society (SAGS) co-hosted this meeting and provided a barbecue dinner to all that attended. Robert Raney and Ruben Sayavedra gave their practice Texas Academy of Science presentations. After the presentations and dinner, an informal session was held where Victor Siller, Amanda Williams, and Rebecca Loos presented their research posters.
